BIOGRAPHY
Erika Grimm (she/her) is a Chicana feminist philosopher, artist, and educator currently based in San Antonio, Texas. She conducts research and teaches courses in the Department of Philosophy at St. Mary's University.
Dr. Grimm's work lies at the intersection of U.S. Latinx and Latin American philosophy (especially Latina and Chicana feminisms), philosophy of race, and contemporary critical phenomenology. Her work focuses on questions of linguistic identity, perception, and embodiment. She is especially interested in interrogating ideological relationships at the nexus of race, language, gender, class, citizenship, and disability.
Dr. Grimm is originally from Southern California, where she graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Philosophy (Linguistics minor) from California State University, Fullerton. After graduating, she moved to Pennsylvania to complete a dual-title Ph.D. in Philosophy and Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies from The Pennsylvania State University. Upon her admission to Penn State, Dr. Grimm received The Graduate School's Dean's Distinguished Graduate Fellowship. She completed her dissertation, entitled "Linguistic Rupture, Racialization, and Resistance in Latina/x Feminisms: A Critical Phenomenological Approach," in 2023.
Dr. Grimm joined the Department of Philosophy at St. Mary's University in 2023, where she teaches Introduction to Philosophy, Foundations of Ethics, Philosophy in Latin America, and Feminist Philosophy. She has previously taught courses at Penn State in both Philosophy and Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, including Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of Gender, Social/Political Philosophy, and Representing Women and Gender in Art, Literature, and Pop Culture, among others.
As a proud faculty member of her Hispanic-Serving Institution in South Texas, Dr. Grimm is committed to serving underrepresented/underserved students and community members in her work on- and off-campus. She is a volunteer through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) at St. Mary's Center for Legal and Social Justice as well as the TREB (Texas Regional Ethics Bowl). Dr. Grimm serves as the faculty advisor for both the St. Mary's Philosophy Club and Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honors Society. She has also supervised student projects though the St. Mary's McNair Scholars Program on the topics of race, gender, and immigration ethics in Latinx/decolonial feminisms.
